German Development Media Awards

I'm writing to you because I'd like to draw your attention to the German Development Media Awards. These new Awards recognize excellence in human rights and development journalism and are an initiative by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Deutsche Welle.

The German Development Media Awards are open to journalists from Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Germany. While we have received quite a few submissions from journalists in Asia, only a small selection are displaying high-quality journalism. I would therefore be grateful if you could pass on this information to your professional network, as we would greatly like to receive more journalistically sound submissions.

Entries can include stories in all journalistic formats in print, radio, TV and online. The stories should focus clearly on human rights and development. The entries must have been published or broadcast between January 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013. The competition languages are English, Chinese, French, Arabic, German, Russian or Spanish. Six prizes worth 2,000 Euros each will be presented as part of the awards. We are also accepting nominations for these Awards; so if you know a journalist who you think particularly deserves this Award, please get in touch with my colleague Barbara Gruber (
